Sam is an abnormal violist, although technically all violists are abnormal by nature. They even tend to gravitate toward each other and glomb in an awkward manner... like platelets, or crayons left in the back seat of a Toyota.
Yes... she is entirely a violist by nature, personality and association. However, unlike many other music types she has other interests which she actively pursues rather than practicing. This has caused mostly intrigue, as the others watch her paint everything, infuse vodka, befriend the locals, create with clay, yell at people while driving, pick locks, photograph oddities, and look for something to do with her life that will be different every day.
She's working on that last bit the most.
